Welcome to the final post of Clear Trace Investigation’s Cybersecurity Awareness Month series. As remote work and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policies grow, so do the risks of unsecured devices exposing sensitive data. With 70% of employees working remotely at least part-time (per 2024 Gallup data), here’s how to secure your remote setup.
Why Remote Work and BYOD Are Risky
Using personal devices for work or working from home introduces vulnerabilities. Unsecured Wi-Fi, shared devices, or lax security practices can expose client data or corporate systems. We’ve seen cases where a family member’s infected laptop compromised a client’s remote work device, leading to data leaks.
Common Risks
Unsecured Wi-Fi: Public or poorly protected home networks expose data.
Shared Devices: Family members using work devices can introduce malware.
Unencrypted Data: Sensitive files on personal devices are easy targets.
Lack of Policies: Without clear BYOD guidelines, employees may neglect security.
Best Practices for Security
Secure Your Wi-Fi: Use WPA3 encryption, a strong password (see Week 2), and hide your network’s SSID. Update your router’s firmware.
Use a VPN: Connect to work systems via a company-approved VPN to encrypt traffic.
Separate Work and Personal Use: Use dedicated work profiles or devices. If BYOD, install security software and keep it updated.
Enable Device Security: Use strong passwords, enable device encryption, and install antivirus software on all BYOD devices.
Follow Company Policies: Adhere to your employer’s BYOD guidelines, like app restrictions or remote wipe capabilities.
What to Do If Compromised
Disconnect Devices: Remove affected devices from the network.
Notify IT: Inform your employer’s Information Security or IT team for containment and recovery. Never take action on your own to “fix” a security issue.
Change Credentials: Update passwords and check for unauthorized access.
Contact Us: We can trace breaches and recommend secure remote setups.
Stay Secure Anywhere
Secure remote work and BYOD practices protect both work and personal data. By following these steps, you can work confidently from anywhere. Thank you for joining our Cybersecurity Awareness Month series—let’s keep “Securing Our World” all year round!
